I’ve been invited to teach a class!
On writing and making comics! The class is learning about immigration and making comics about their research! Awesome, right?
Ok SOMEBODY PLEASE, tell me how, as a really queer looking weirdo, I am going deal with 8th graders? I’ve worked with much younger kids before and yeah they ask questions but it’s usually out of genuine curiosity. (When teaching a similar class a few months ago to 6 year olds, a girl interrupted this boy asking me what she perceived to be rude questions and said “Ugh, it doesn’t matter!” then turned to me and said “Don’t listen to him.”) Pubescent kids are probably going to be a little meaner and more defensive because they’re entrenched in developing their own gender identities and I’m probably going to confuse the shit out of them. Maybe they’ll just call me Justin Bieber and we’ll laugh and it’ll be fine, I don’t know!
I don’t want to derail the class at all but I want to be able to deal with it appropriately if it comes up. How do I do that?
Or: How do I not to cry when 13 year olds humiliate me?

Maybe you can challenge them/kick their asses and make them reconsider their thinking?
I know it’s not that easy. And kids can be vicious. But seriously: kick their asses.

i think those questions can be a teaching opportunity, though obv not easy to deal with. i say answer appropriate questions simply, clarify that inappropriate questions are not OK, and only be punitive if a kid gets legit nasty. but YMMV!

send them to detention? maybe you should talk to the teacher before you teach the class to see who/if there are troublemakers in the class and what kind of things they do, so you’ll be prepared
